One four day weekend behind me. I’m not sure I was successful at optimal relaxation. My groove was insufficent and my chilling inadequate.
Don’t get me wrong, I did some fun stuff, but it’s like the mood was just sour from start to finish. UltraRage Eta (reviews have gotten better than the first day’s wave, I should point out) was like a foreshadowing moment but it wasn’t what really got the ball rolling.
I think it started with “Requiem for a Dream” at Josh’s. “Bah! I don’t get disturbed by movies,” I had told him. “I’ve watched gory horror and psychological thriller and nothing fazes me. Bring it on!” And when the movie was done I felt like I had conquered it without being affected… BZZT. I can’t put my finger on it, but that puppy DID unsettle me. It did disturb my mood, which was jittery and ill at ease all weekend long.
And that directly led to the much vaunted and puzzling Nothing #8 (see the post below for a link and a nice discussion about the chapter). I also started drafting notes for Nothing #9. My sick mood did wonders for the writing, but the writing plus the mood just made me feel worse, to the point where yesterday I was having physical aches and a bit of nausea. I don’t think it was the flu. I just didn’t feel like things fit around me. Everything was wrong in a bizarre sort of way, and I think reading Thief of Time, Terry Pratchet’s latest and most surreal work, didn’t help matters…
But now it’s over, and I’m back at work. Nothing puts you back in a regimented frame of ordinary living like daily work, so I’ll probably bounce back fast. But I have made one decision. I was considering a true Cthulu-esque horror series for my next project after I finish Sailor Nothing… but I think I had BETTER go back to doing comedy before I try something like that. Just to balance myself out.
…argh. Some jackhole has a laser printer down the hall set to beep in a regular pattern. ‘Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep-BEEBeep. Beep…’ All I need now is a stray air hose’s quiet hiss and I’ll go into a screaming hospital ICU flashback… time to listen to some MP3s to drown it out.
