If you didn’t see last night’s entry and are too lazy to scroll down, SN9’s up.
In other news, I just ordered the USB port sampler kit for Music Gen 2. (UE Music) Now I won’t be stuck with the somewhat weak library of riffs and sounds in the game and can sample from other sources. (The Cowboy Bebop and RealWare vocal clips were kludged on my computer after I had already finished the songs.)
Maybe I am getting serious about this… in my own way. I still have no formal musical training and I can’t believe I’m doing anything more than dorking around with music for fun, but I’ve been getting some highly satisfying results.
Side thought: I believe I’ve got a good ear for tone. After a few listens I can reasonably hum, whistle or sing along to damn near anything, even if I don’t technically know a C flat from a G string. This is interesting considering tone deafness runs in my family. Listening to Dad try to sing along to ‘Drive’ by Incubus is a near Kaufman-esque comedic experience (and no disrespect to him, he’s got good taste in music :) But, I find I can do a reasonable job myself; the only limit is on my actual vocal range, which is lousy. I know precisely WHAT note to hit, I just can’t physically get there. But I digress…
I did the same thing with how I learned to write. Without any formal education beyond the watered down writing projects available in elementary school through high school, I just dove into it and hammered at it until I got better. I still suck in terms of traditional things like grammar and so on, but I’ve read a lot of fiction and had some good forums to display my work in to get comments, and as a result I’m more a self-made writer than a slick professional writer.
I see the same thing happening with music. The same pattern. All I need to do is stick with it rather than have it be a passing obsession — which it may very well be, I’ll warn. But I’ve listened to a hell of a lot of music across many genres and now that I have a ‘pen’, I’m attacking it and gradually improving with experience even if I’m little more than a self-made musician.
…of course, it took over ten years to get where I am in writing and my early writing was absolute crap. Which means I’m in the ‘absolute crap’ phase on music. ^_^; But hey, gotta start somewhere! Pass the mike, yo.
