Since I try to write in here once a day and neglected to yesterday, I figured I’d make up for it with a lengthy State of the Flower update.
Overall, I’m doing pretty well. Last week was sort of a Low and High… Tuesday=Hysteria, Wednesday=Depression, Thursday=Upset, Friday=Better, Weekend=Good, now I’m into Groovy and Upbeat. I gots no complaints about life right now; maybe it’s a sort of inverted backlash, but hey, happy is happy.
I’ve been halfheartedly working on UltraRage Theta. I farmed out everything other than plot scenes and two fights, one of which won’t be much of a fight. I don’t THINK I’m phoning it in; I’m trying to keep the quality up there even if I’d really like to get this out of the way…
Music’s coming along well. I got two solid high-speed tracks done, so I may switch gears back to softer ambient stuff. I was worried I was stuck in an ‘ambient rut’ before, which is why I was determined to do stuff at 150BPM or higher for awhile. Dare I say it, I enjoy doing music more than I enjoy writing… it’s less effort, even if it takes the same amount of time, and since I’ve always been a music fan I can enjoy the end results as a listener. Songs can be experienced in 3-5 minutes; you need much more than that to read a story, and I don’t get a lot of pleasure from re-reading my stories right after I write ’em.
(Not that I’m certain anybody really cares about my lame music hacking, since most folks just mail me to say how much Slayers Reflect or Sailor Nothing r0xx0rz, but I’m happy with the songs, at least. Stuff that consistently makes me smile is hard to find, so you go with what you got.)
Anyway, don’t worry, I’m not hanging up the typewriter in exchange for a piano… I still have UE cooking in the back of my head, and I drafted out 20 possible episodes I can pick and choose from. Wai!
In other news, I got a GameBoy Advance emulator and an assload of ROMs. This makes me an evil pirate. (Of course, I’d be buying them and buying a GBA, except that Nintendimwits designed the control scheme for “Normal People”, not for my weird little hands that can’t reach the trigger buttons and find the D-pad to be insanely stiff and hard to use. Could be worse, it could be the Ergonomic To The Point of Unusability N64 Controller.)
None of the games I’ve grabbed really grab me… except one. Advance Wars. BUY THIS GAME NOW IF YOU HAVE A GBA. It rocks the body that starts the party, yo. I usually hate strategy games but this one is A) simple, B) balanced, has C) an excellent tutorial, and D)… it’s cute! *^^* Wai! It takes forever to play a ‘match’ in the game, but it’s a damned satisfying experience watching colorful little SD army men nuking each other. I’ve whittled away a few hours already plowing through battle training and am looking forward to brawling a bit between writing stints tonight.
Now, the game isn’t demanding on the controls… it’s turn based. No time pressure. I COULD buy a GBA and a copy of the cart legit and be able to play it even with my stubby l’il fingers. But, I don’t see buying the system just for one game — if other puzzle games or low impact things come out, I’ll think about it. Maybe Advance Wars + Pokemon Crystal + something else would be enough to convince me… shame it doesn’t play SNK vs. Capcom Card Fighters Clash…
And now, the serious stuff.
If I do have one complaint about life right now, it’s a distinct worry that things are about to get ugly again on the world scene. I told my Dad in e-mail today as we were discussing Clear Channel Radio Broadcasting’s ridiculous banned song list about how America tends to go for the knee-jerk, poorly thought out and overblown reaction nine times out of ten.
Dubya keeps doing these ‘I’m the big bad sherrif in town!’ type speeches, directly referencing wanting Bin Laden wasted… when we don’t even have a complete evidence trail yet. Other governments are saying they’ll support us, but they’re getting a bit leery of our gung-ho attitude. They want this as clean as possible, because there’s no reason not to be clean except to swing our testicles around.
It’s not just Afghans at risk here; our civil liberties, particularly online freedoms and privacy, are being chewed into in the name of “Stopping the Evil”. (See also: “Think of the Children” or any number of other excuses to tighten the screws.) Who’s to say they’ll ease up after Ladin’s executed by lethal injection in a Texas federal prison? Now that we have a blank check to become a locked down militaristic paranoid nation, I could easily see our government using this opportunity to exert control over its own population and the rest of the world…
Blargh. No; I am in a good mood. I’ll worry about my paranoid speculation when it becomes truth. Until then I have writing, music and gaming to do. My life to live. Until they nuke Washington.
