UPDATE: UE02 Final is now posted. Just some spellchecking done, no changes.
UE03 just didn’t feel right to me. I didn’t WANT to write it; partially due to the emotional turmoil, but partially… it just didn’t click.
UE01 was hyper. Very hyper, lots of wild fun. UE02 was more laid back. And UE03, as plotted (fully plotted, I finished the outline) is slow and laid back and philosophical…
No. Unreal Estate, as originally envisioned, was a wild comedy and action tour de force with some romance and science fiction warped into the mix. Two straight episodes of calm discussions and such, especially this early in the run, that’s not going to work. I need something high energy. Something that will explore the whole cast, and put more justification and development into the impending romance(s).
Enter: the alternate plan for UE03, which I’m outlining now. A highly structured bit, where Mallory has a scene with each girl on seperate days, so we can establish how he relates to them. A bit like his sequential encounters on the sidewalk in Urbana, taken up a notch.
Let this be a lesson to future writers. If you plot the hell out of something, it’s all set and ready to execute but it still feels wrong… back up. Think about completely different directions you could go in. If you’re reluctant to move forward then it’s your instincts telling you you’re going the wrong way.
I have two days totally to myself, I’m going to try to get at least a few damn paragraphs hammered out by then. And maybe (ack!) spellcheck UE02 and post it to the FFML. I wonder if anybody there remembers I’m writing this? I wonder if they care?
