No gimmick title. Just the plain truth.
I’ve always loved the Olympic games. Summer or winter, I love to watch them, from opening ceremonies all the way through. It doesn’t matter what the event is or who’s participating… something about the concept, the games themselves, just clicks for me. Whether it’s the notion of peaceful competition, unity of nations, or just the aura of excitement around it… I groove on it.
I remember being in Florida on a family trip to Disney World, back when Epcot Center was new and I was too young to realize it was a commercial indulgence. It was the first games with hot dogging (freestyle tricking ski jumps) was a game, and I would lie down on the floor of my aunt’s house, watching bobsledding, hot dog, ski jimping, and others… and I remember that more than I remember anything else about the vacation.
I remember being in college during the last winter Olympics, coming home from classes and turning on NBC and just leaving it on until I go to bed. Even if I was busy on the computer, I’d have it on in the background, listening and glancing over. Letting it fill the small dorm room which was usually so quiet and lonely.
Not all the memories are good. Usually the annoying ones are the ones involving the endless parade of video packages the TV network airs to illustrate the apparently inescapable drama of the atheletes getting here. Push that aside; I want the sport. Just the sport. I hope this year’s will be better about it.
So I sat here tonight, and I watched the whole opening routine. No writing, no RP. Just chatter with friends on IM and MU, while watching the ceremony. And I feel damn good right now. Maybe even a little choked up inside. I’m usually too jaded, too cynical to really give a serious thought to anything… but this is an exception to the rule.
Just felt like sharing with y’all. Thanks.
