Well, since enough people asked… here’s Random Bits of What’s Going On With Me. It may be whiny/angsty. But yes, news about UE06 is included.
It’s long, so I’ll LJ-Cut for the sake of my friends lists.
Today, I called into work sick. Or rather, buzzed upstairs on the intercom asking Mom to mail my boss (who is cool with that) and then went back to bed. See, yesterday, against all sanity and common sense, I ate a Snicker’s bar. A whole one, and not one of those ‘fun size’ ones. The sugar rush was nice but the crash left me with a headache that I just ignored, hoping it would go away. It didn’t; it persisted all day even if it lessened… and when I woke up this morning I had a THROBBING KILLER EVIL BASTARD of a headache and was completely exhausted.
The problem is, I COULD have dragged myself out of bed and gone to work 15 minutes late at worst. I’d be miserable but nothing was stopping me. And I didn’t. Instead I slept another six hours. @_@ Now that I’m up I COULD get dressed and go in… in short: I’m not sure if this means I’m playing hooky or not. The headache IS gone, so the sleep did help, so I guess it was justified, but… I dunno.
I really wish I hadn’t eaten that candy bar. Then for dinner mom made steak. And then because I’m a gluttonous pig I ate some corn chips. At least I got in a halfhearted exercising session; I have to be better about that if I’m gonna drop a few pounds. (Assuming I’m capable of dropping a few pounds.)
In random news, yesterday, my co-worker got a very odd piece of spyware that kept opening dating service and health supplement windows at random times, even when browsing our own FDA internal database administration pages. Not Good. She had comet cursor on there so I assumed that was the culprit, Ad-Awared her system clean (she had Gator, Webhancer, CC, Alexia, and Web3000), but after a reboot it was STILL there. She checked her add-remove programs list and found something weird called ‘DownloadWare’. Uninstalled it and it promptly opened a web page asking for user feedback. I’m hoping that was the culprit. In odder news, MY system had all of the above spyware save for Comet Cursor, too… how did THAT get there?
I was reading the RPG threads before — fun stuff. I’ve always liked the general idea of RPGs… but I’m very, very bad at keeping to the rules and doing the math and rolling the dice and ‘gaming’. I’m more into the ‘roleplaying’. Two sessions into my BESM campaign online, Culture Shock, we dropped the rules completely since it was taking too long to do fights and even the simplified BESM I was going with was excessive. I guess I just don’t have a head for numbers, which is a shame, because I really do like RPGs. And to answer someone’s question: HOL is ‘Human Occupied Landfill’, a rare indy RPG I saw once about a civilization living in a global junkyard — sort of like Battle Angel. The cool thing was that the whole book was HANDWRITTEN, no computer typesetting. Whoa.
I have the inexplicable urge to build a city. No… it’s explicable, actually. I was dreaming about it last night, about doing the whole thing in Lego. I wanted to drive to Toys R Us to get some Lego for it, but it was 7pm and I was sick and Mom would worry, so I didn’t. And I know where the dream came from: Shenmue!
I LOVED that game. Not the fighting (which I sucked at) but the whole living, breathing city. Every store detailed. Houses and shops and people going about their business. Heck, I stalked a cute short-haired blonde american around awhile to see what she does day to day. And you know I have a fetish for ‘world building’, what with the UE encyclopedia and all of FWLS… doing it on a smaller scale, designing buildings and people and complete backstories and everything to make a living, breathing city… ooooh.
Of course, to do this, I’d need massive 3-D graphics skillz and an engine. Or art skillz to draw the place out in 2-D. Or I could build it in Lego, but that’s a little limiting. Or I could do a MUCK with coded people and rooms and stuff, but nobody reads room descs anymore; they just wanna know the names of the exits and have a map handy so they can zip to the local restaurant. *sigh* So, not sure what to do with the urge.
Now, finally, UE06.
It’s not that I’m blocked, or not sure what to do next. I have a nicely done outline. Aside from how to work Mallory’s shock into the need for him to attend class and talk to people, I’m not worried about it. What’s held me back is that I have so many social things going on in my life, RL and VR. There was the partying this weekend, and some RP this week, and such like that… today, since I’m sick (I think…) I’m going to try to get a scene or two done. I have SMackdown tonight, yes, but that only runs to 10:30 and I can definitely squeeze out a chunk after if I gotta. Thanks for the support, guys, I mean it.
Oh, and in a final random note… we’re getting broadband again at last. Cable modem by Comcast. I’m ALMOST dreading it, too… now that I know more about the crappy policies cable modem providers set up, blocking ports, setting invisible lines you must not cross in bandwidth usage, monitoring what you’re doing… but I NEED better connectivity. I hope I don’t lose access to my Usenet anime erotica binaries groups. …erm, you didn’t just read that.
Finally (#2), thanks for posting in my how you doin’ thread. ^_^ I seem to be setting world records for thread comment counts lately… it’s fun!
