Well, I have two competing ideas for UE07 now.
We find out about Lorelei’s tragic backstory, and why she left her home over a conflict with her father and the death of someone close to her.
Plusses: Episode is generally 90% serious and involves some thematic elements of life and death, as well as Kisei’s approach to murder. Has juicy, creamy satisfying character development of a serious tone for Lorelei, who has been largely comedic. Fans like tragic drama.
Minuses: Doesn’t totally fit Lorelei’s character, since she seems to have no problems with violence whatsoever. Doesn’t allow for much gamer humor. Plot hook that leads to the climax is sketchy at best since it involves the Akira Trick of pretending to be janitors and futzing your way in and the facility in question REALLY should know better.
We find out about Lorelei’s less tragic backstory, and why she left her home over a love triangle gone bad and an old rivalry.
Plusses: LOTS of gamer humor, LOTS of action; we haven’t seen Lorelei kick much ass at all and this could be a good showcase. Introduces a fun rival who could re-appear later. Fits Lorelei’s personality more to play to her excesses without requiring her to reject them.
Minuses: It’s rather silly, really. Not much screentime for Meiko or Eiko. Doesn’t use the neat idea I had for how to ‘resolve’ Tribal Alpha (but I might be able to work it in). Is generally shallower and more entertainment oriented; the same themes are given basic examination but aren’t probed relentlessly.
I’m not sure which to go for. #1 smacks of Quality Writing Which Fans Send Me Meaningful Letters About (see also: Sailor Nothing) but has a few logic holes and could be completely wrong for Lorelei’s character. #2 smacks of Fun, Freewheeling Mania Which Is Not Particularly Amazing But Yes Is Fun which…
Wait, I already summarized the +/- points.
I guess it really boils down to: What IS UE? Is it drama, is it comedy? Is it both? Which way does it lean more? Which should be our ‘standard’ tone and which is the ‘special episode’ tone? Should I follow the Slayers standard of having largely comedic hijinx which get deadly serious when the chips are down, or mix it, or… agh. I dunno. What FEELS right for an episode about Lorelei’s past coming on the heels of 5 and 6, what feels right in conjunction with the other episodes? …that’s a lot of ? marks…
Anyway, um. What do you think? I won’t go by exact vote and could change my mind either way, but I figured I’d lob this puppy out there and get some reax.
ObStateOfFlower: Today hasn’t been as surreal as yesterday, but has been boring as hell. — Reading GameFAQs user reviews of Dragon’s Lair is funny, especially from 13 year olds who don’t know what a laserdisc is. — Lots of neat replies to my last batch of reviews, thanks guys. — And I really, really need a shower…
