I saw the funniest thing today on pouet.net, the repository for all things PC-EuroDemo.
Back in ’92, when I was but a wee lad in high school, EuroDemos were the baddest thing since sliced bread. A bunch of psychotic people in Finland (or Sweden, or Germany, or Denmark) would work in groups to make these intensely cool sound and light shows using nothing more than a PC, some intense assembler coding skills, and a little imagination. And the best of the bunch? Future Crew. They later went on to make a little game called Max Payne (!)… but at Assembly ’92, which is a bit like Anime Expo for the demo scene, they released a demo called Second Reality.
At the time, it was damn impressive. (Nowadays it’s easily outshined since coders use 3-D acceleration hardware and concentrate more on artistic achievement than showing off code tricks, but I digress.) It had 3-D voxel worlds, plasma effects, great texture mapped scrollers, and even a flat/gourad shaded spaceship fly-through of a city. The TREES, man, the TREES! So smooth!
Well, 10 years pass and it’s 2002. And what do I find? This. Some lunatics last year went and recreated every scene, every fancy special effect from Second Reality… IN reality. The bouncing red glenz polygon on the checkerboard? They put together a poly-thing with toothpicks, covered it in cheap red transluscent plastic, and bobbled it up and down over a real checkerboard on a piece of string. The spaceships flying to the horizon and then exploding? Paper airplane on a string, a cherry bomb behind a poorly photocopied photo of some scenery. WHEEE!
Nostalgia. Ahhh. Those were the days. Except for that whole high school thing, which was shit.
Anyway, UE07 is updated. ^^; The good news is that I completely fixed the problems from the last two updates; the motivations for each character make sense now, the plot holes are explained, some mysterious foreshadowing is inserted and there’s new footage– err, scenage. You’ll want to re-read from the end of Lorelei’s flashback to have it all click, I’ll warn. Sorry, but hey, it’s a draft, y’know?
Je suis en une rolle.
