Update: New UE Fanart!
Okay, after getting some extra sleep last night, I’m now in a better state of health. Went into work on time with no problems. Here are some random thoughts, since I wanted to post something to clear out the grumpy post I had up last.
Spiderman has made 350 million in about a month. Lord of the Rings, to date, has made 315 million. Attack of the clones clocks in around 250ish. Draw your own conclusions. We live in a consumer oriented corporate culture, so box office sums have a deep signifigance on our personal lives.
I tried to get some Apple //e emulation up and running last night, but couldn’t find an emulator that reproduced the sound properly. Shifted to using a //gs emulator since it was backwards compatable ala Playstation 2 / Playstation 1 — much better, but it’s a crankier emulator and more often than not won’t boot up disk images properly. Grrr.
You know, everybody pining for the Good Old Days when our computers crashed less really needs to think back TO the Good Old Days and remember just how lousy they were. Bad disk sectors. IRQ conflicts. Fuzzy TV graphics. Cleaning out TSR programs to desperately free up memory. The cheerful little ‘bomb’ alert window on a Mac. Commodore 64 disk loading times. Completely mangling your PC configuration just by adding a modem — or trying to get a modem to work in the first place. Folks, computers are just as cranky and irritable and easily nuked as they always were. Microsoft is not to blame for that. We’re to blame for seeing the past with rose colored glasses.
This is what annoys me about ‘classic gaming’ elitists too. “Back then, you had to make ORIGINAL game ideas! It wasn’t all about the sales and marketing! Nowadays it’s like Quake 78 and King of Street Fighter Alpha Dash Yadda! Classic gaming ROCKS, WOOO!” I guess they’re ignoring the 85,282 Pac-Man and Space Invader clone games that were cashing in on the craze and the massive flyer advertising campaigns to get arcade owners to buy crap games and the many, many, MANY Pac-Man sequels that rarely offered more than the original. It’s a business, folks. It has ALWAYS been a business. Don’t pretend that gaming was ever a mystic, pure art which was untainted by the dollar.
…wait, I’m ranting. I stop now. Other topics.
Read the spoilers for WWE Smackdown. Looks like a pretty good show, and we finally find out who the Hurricane’s arch-nemesis is … and they didn’t show the live audience. It’s a pretape segment they’re keeping quiet to avoid ruining the surprise. I am ALL for that and looking forward to it. And in hindsight, Raw didn’t suck TOO bad, since it had its moments… but ‘moments’ aren’t enough to make me happy with a show.
Myth and Chu’s radio play of UE is ticking along nicely! I forget if I mentioned this or not but Myth posted an audition call to a fan RP message board and DAMN if it didn’t get slammed with responses and auditions. There are still some kinks to iron out, but it’s a great response and I’m thankful for it.
Finally, in other UE news, I’m letting UE09 percolate in the back of my mind before I attack the outline. The problem is trying to get into the mindset of a 12 year old kid when I don’t even remember what I was like at 12. Of course, this could be an advantage, as Eiko is a contradiction in and of herself — she’s 11, she acts younger than her age (standard ‘Wai!’ anime kid), but she acts older than her age (economics). I need to take that and translate it into how Eiko will react in a situation, what her motivations are, etc. It’s the same issues I had with Lorelei and Kisei; I’ve dealt with all the girls on a very surface level, now it’s time to figure out what makes them tick and what happens when they can’t rely on the comfort of the same old, same old.
More to come. Oh, and scope out the song I’m listening to via peer to peer or (gasp) album purchasing, it’s good stuff. Tenacious D has that faux-satanic 80’s rock metal ballad thing down pat; blatantly overly dramatic lyrics and soothing guitar / power ballad cheese. If I could play guitar, this is exactly the sort of stuff I’d do. It’s my humor style in a nutshell. (If a bit dirtier.
