Following a stray posting to alt.binaries.emulators.misc, I found… Cliff Hanger! YES! FINALLY! After weeks of searching, and after hours of downloading, and after paying five bucks to get premium access to the fileplanet-like server… I HAVE CLIFF HANGER!
…for those not in the know, Cliff Hanger is a laserdisc arcade game from 1984 much like Dragon’s Lair. It uses footage from the two Lupin III movies, Castle of Cogliostro and Mystery of Mamo, and is dubbed hillariously badly. It’s not actually a really good game, but it’s a piece of history, a lot of fun to toy with, and just the thing to add another jewel to the crown of my MAME cabinet. SCORE!
I also went to The Sum of All Beers with my father today. Good father/son bonding; I suspect he was lookin’ for some ever since his heart surgery. We went to a new theatre in town, which was pretty good — except the handicapped parking was on the wrong side of the building. Wasupwitdat?
There was also an arcade on the second floor (SCORE! BONUS!) even if it just had the standard Dave-And-Busters-Yuppie-Attracting lightgun and driving games. There WAS a combo Ms. Pac-Man / Galaga cabinet, though, at 50 cents a play (outrage!). I got through four mazes of Ms. Pac-Man, a new best for me. Much to my surprise, the game had a insert-coin-to-continue function… what kind of pussy needs a continue function on Pac-Man? I mean, jeez, that’s weak, y’all. Real gamers play one quarter’s worth, and BAM, that’s it, that’s your score, deal with it! It’s not like a brawler game that’s designed to consume quarters via mildly unfair bosses and overwhelming odds (TMNT2).
On the way home from the movie I explained the whole ‘pattern memorizing maze run crappy AI’ beef I had with Pac-Man, and how Elevator Action was far superior, and so on. He agreed that a game which can be nailed via a pattern is in dire need of superior coding. Not sure if I bored him to death with it, but I can’t help it; I’m turning into a retrogaming geek. ^_^;
As for the movie, well… it was kinda unbelievable. I just can’t see members of the president’s cabinet acting like 7th graders / chickens with heads cut off. Ditto for the Russians. Maybe the overacting and juvenile scripting was designed to make sure it was ‘exciting’, but eeeh. And how do cellphones work perfectly inside a nuked city? UnScore.
Okay, now for the bit a lot of you were waiting for: UE09 updated, two new scenes. This episode will be shorter than most, so be prepared. Should still be fun, though. I’m hoping to final-draft UE07 and UE08 soon. Don’t expect more than a spellcheck on those two; the plots are just the way they need to be. New fanart on the horizon from Dae-chan — should be fanservicy cool fun! Wai. Flower out.
