No new UE, lemme get that out of the way. It’s looking like I won’t have time/mood to work on it until next week. I can accept that.
Spent last night (guess!) tweaking the MAME cab. Got pinball running on the Emulaxian frontend properly — worked at downloading a new laserdisc game, Thayer’s Quest. This is gonna be fun to try and play with no keyboard… for those who aren’t familiar with this obscure game, it’s basically an FMV based adventure game. No point and click, but you use a keyboard (a real QWERTY keyboard on an arcade cab!) to pick inventory items for use, make multiple choice selections, type in text, etc. I downloaded a virtual keyboard which I can click on with the mouse; hopefully that’ll do it. If not, I’ll have to just play this one on my normal computer, foo.
It’s memorable for being developed by some of the guys who did Dragon’s Lair, for being the first keyboard driven no-twitch-action based coin op arcade game, and actually allowing you to save your progress to internal memory. Provided ten more people didn’t save their games between your last session and this one, you could resume where you left off. Killer.
I’ve pretty much exhausted the list of available, emulated laserdisc games. All that’s left is Galaxy Ranger (an updated Astron Belt) and Super Don-Quixote (which looks a bit weak, and has emulation problems).
My next conquest area is going to be light-gun games. I’ve already got House of the Dead 2, Duck Hunt, Hogan’s Alley, Police Trainer, and a few Exidy games (Crossbow and the hideously sadistic wouldn’t-get-by-modern-censors Chiller). Once the MAME team finishes the CoJag driver I’m adding Area 51 to the thing, but I don’t know if my CPU is fast enough… I should’ve spent the extra dough and gotten more than 1ghz. *sigh* At least in positive news, Digital Leisure (the canadian company that releases lots of LD games for PC) is making CD-ROM versions of Mad Dog McCree and Who Shot Johnny Rock?. Ah, American Laser Games! Such bad acting! Such fun shooting of bad actors. …now all I need is the damn lightgun, which got pushed back to mid-July release. Argh.
There’s not much new to report in non-gaming news. I’m trying to take it easy this week and not really do anything huge… this weekend’s gonna be rough enough as is. Tonight my friends drop in for Smackdown, which’ll be phun. .
