Success! I can now host games. I found out what the problem was — ZoneAlarm was blocking the server port. Weird. Now, I had disconnected the router to do this and plugged up directly, so maybe it’s not totally fixed, but I know what at least ONE of the problems was. I twiddled ZA a bit and got it to work.
Pest Control (Penultima Module #1) is 97% complete. May need some final tweaking, and the quest journal doesn’t work totally right, but it’s basically solid. I’m working on Penultima City itself next — once that’s done (it’s not an adventure, just a town, so it won’t be too hard) I can start promoting the webpage. And maybe take a break to work some UE and study more scripting so my later modules can be more complicated.
I still have balance issues (see comments on last post) that I may not be able to totally solve, since I don’t come from a pen and paper background. I’ve decided to err on the side of caution… make it too easy rather than too hard. The fun is in playing the adventure and seeing the story unfold, not in running into a brick wall repeatedly.
One thing that this will NOT be capable of is persistent multiplayer. That means that there are one-shot triggers, monsters that do not respawn and other things more suitable for single player or cooperative party play than for folks randomly popping in and out of the server. I’ve discussed this already, but just a reminder. You can host Pest Control online if you want but you may need to restart the module now and then as folks ‘clean it out’.
Brian and Montae played through it last night and gave it good reviews, so… I hope to have a download available for y’all later.
