UPDATE: See this announcement. I’ll be doing a complete update of the Penultima mods tonight to adjust a few things I’ve gotten a lot of complaints about.
Ever peruse the ‘general’ sections of the NWN boards on nwn.bioware.com? Man, what a collection of trolls, player haters, this-game-suxx0rz and other dicks trying to ruin the fun for everybody else. I haven’t seen this much bile and arrogance since… well, the FFML. Or Improfanfic. Or Slashdot. Or even Livejournal. In fact, damn near any Internet community on the face of the, er, net.
Why’s it gotta be that way? Only reason I can think of is Sturgeon’s Law, that 90% of anything is crap. But know there are plenty of fine players out there and I’ve gotten an overwhelming amount of positive feedback, which makes me wonder why the most publically vocal groups are the ones who loathe and spit and kick and thrash for no real productive reason whatsoever. It’s perplexing and fascinating in the same way looking at auto accidents or ‘When Animals Attack’ is eye-catching.
I think I better apply my general rule to this sort of thing and try to be an outsider rather than play insider games. Don’t play politiks, ignore the trolls, do my own thing, work my own projects, if people like them, good, if not, no big deal. The key is to hype your own stuff but be cool about it, and don’t take things seriously to the point of acting like the diehards who can’t seem to cope with life outside their sphere. Good advice for anybody.
Although I do feel sorry for Bioware. These guys put many years and a lot of their heart into a game and here they have to deal with people coming into their house and pooping on the carpet. They don’t get nearly as much respect as they deserve; if you don’t like the game, that’s fine, but there’s no reason to act like an asshole too. Bioware doesn’t have a choice in the matter of playing it as a cool outsider, they are the definition of the inside. Poor guys
