Why is it that people either totally adore Penultima, or think it’s a piss-poor pile of shirt that insults their intelligence?
Ever since I released module #4 it’s like detractors are pouring out of the woodwork. Check out this comment thread, which has plenty of praise but several “You suck, this is lame, you have no skills” sorts of posts. Then there’s the person or persons who are actively voting the module down to give it one of the lowest scores on the site — nothing’s been able to counterbalance it yet. I know the scores are meaningless, but this means either a group of people hate it so much that they feel the need to do this… or the general population hates it. How can I tell?
I know I’m not god’s gift to module creation. I’m fine with being above average. I stink at doing XP/treasure balance, and I cover some flaws with humor. (See also: Pong Kombat, which was a pretty lame game but a lot of fun anyway because I was more concerned with entertainment value than technical excellence.) I don’t mind the modules not being the second coming of Gary Gygax or something, but is this really called for? Are they really THAT bad? It’s disheartening as hell to sit down in front of the toolkit and try to build when what I’ve been reading lately is telling me to stop.
There’s not really much I can do to improve the mods beyond what I’m doing already. This is as good as I get; what I produce is what I’m shooting for and what satisifes me. I’m hoping to hire someone to help me with XP balance for the second campaign, but beyond that, I can’t do anything about how much you enjoy the quests, dialogue, monsters, etc.. Either it works or it doesn’t, and while it seems to work for most folks, the vitrol being poured out by the ones who loathe it is pretty unsettling.
Bleah. I don’t know. When are you allowed to legally complain about detractors? At what point is it just oversensitive whining and when is it pretty justified? All I know is that this stuff is pretty mood souring. Nobody’s ever attacked UE like that — hell, not even my Slayers stuff, beyond some canon nuts who I didn’t care about. If you don’t like it, that’s fine, but why be obnoxious about it?
Enough ranting. Back to work, I guess.
