One thing I really like about Penultima is that it’s got some stylings of japanese CRPGs. Examples: Handy (if contrived) shortcuts to get back after beating the boss so you don’t have to march across the whole mod again, boss battles designed with a little cut scene before and after, and boss battles at ALL, really. And NPCs that basically just stand around or wander aimlessly waiting for you to talk to them.
I’ve finished 90% of P#5, and am on the last boss battle with Kaos now. It’s going to be very Final Fantasy, in that the boss is a four stage monstrosity that you have to repeatedly beat down. Unfortunately I can’t find any monsters in the toolkit that look right for your basic Giant Kefka/Sephiroth Final Form, so the threat will primarily be spawned helpers, but it should work out in the end. You got a wee taste of it at the end of Hazard Pay, after all.
In less uplifting news, I feel a measure of defeat regarding the comment thread mentioned earlier. I’m not replying to it anymore, but Synaster’s basically succeeded in completely hijacking the thread to promote his own work and make himself look good (even if mostly he’s making himself look like an idiot). It’s pretty disruptive to, oh, talking about THE MOD, which is the whole reason the comment thread exists in the first place… add that to the 600+ script kiddie driven negative votes that I got and it’s like I’ve been effortlessly crushed without any real shot at reprisal.
I hate bullies. Always have, always will. In movies, on TV, in real life, anywhere. I abhor the sort who get off on demonstrating their power against someone who can do nothing to stop it. This is no exception.
Now, I’m not depressed about module reaction — I know that the overwhelming majority of response is quite positive, so the mods themselves are doin’ just fine. I’m simply “Bleh, whatever” in regards to the NWVault experience since it’s disappointing that it got this bad just because of two people.
And it does make me think twice about whether or not I want to.. etc
Update: Mayseth mailed me to say he’s convinced Synaster to give it a rest, and they’re going to have an anti-troll system built in to the comment boards soon. That’s all I needed to know to restore my confidence. ^_^
All the UE fans can rejoice shortly and put away the sharp objects because I’m finally coming back to them to do UE10, before I touch Penultima again (for the second campaign).
And in a little upnote ending, this looks really cool. If they get a good screenwriter on it (me! me!) and keep Offspring and Bad Religion on the soundtrack, keep the original colorful, wild and fun spirit, it could rock. I’m thinking something Fifth Element style in terms of fun visual design and action. Of course, knowing Hollywood odds are they’ll make the soundtrack entirely hip-hop and try to play it as a ‘darker, more futuristic’ story. (Resident Evil, anyone? Although at least RE got the zombies right.)
