I hate to post twice in a day, so make sure you read my previous, more LJstyle post, but…
As seen on /., many Americans feel that the first amendment is contrary to the War on Terrorism(tm). Some really shocking statistics in there; maybe they’re fudged, since the report WAS trying to show how thickbrained people are willing to give up the principles we founded this damn country on to keep the Bad People from doing Bad Things, but sweet jesus I can’t believe people really think like this. I particularly love the stat about folks saying infringing on the rights of the religious is A-OK… since they’re probably thinking “Those OTHER, evil religions, not my holy wonderful cross-driven religion.”
Also on /., an excellent quote which sums up how I feel nicely:
Beware the leader who bangs the drums of war in order to whip the citizenry into a patriotic fervor, for patriotism is indeed a double-edged sword. It both emboldens the blood, just as it narrows the mind. And when the drums of war have reached a fever pitch and the blood boils with hate and the mind has closed, the leader will have no need in seizing the rights of the citizenry. Rather, the citizenry, infused with fear and blinded by patriotism, will offer up all of their rights unto the leader and gladly so. How do I know? For this is what I have done. And I am Caesar. – Julius Caesar
But don’t worry. It’ll all come out in the wash, and those responsible will pleadingly state that “Mistakes were made.” Of course, they were still MADE in the first place, but we’ll be quick to forgive and forget — or better yet, crucify a handful of people and cheer that evil is punished when we didn’t bother addressing what caused the situation in the first place.
….and in surprisingly positive news, my FLCL DVD #1 FINALLY SHIPPED! YES! :D …um, now back to the soul-crushing machine of government.
