For a change, my 4-day weekend went really well. I socialized, did stuff with family, wrote fiction, worked Penultima, saw anime, and more. All in all, not too shabby.
Saw Love Hina v4. Good stuff; it felt a little more choppy than previous episodes, and some of the stuff in the kissing episode was slightly creepy (to the non-hentai side of me, of course) but otherwise lots of fun. And I’m still mystified as to how Naru goes up a few cup sizes whenever she’s naked. That must be one heck of a confining undergarment she wears.
Excel Saga v2 was also on the docket. It felt a lot more disconnected than the last DVD of stuff — the ongoing ‘uberplot’ that linked all the episodes together was a bit thin here, strictly covering the first missions of the civil servants and Pedro’s underworld journey. ….yes, I was expecting plot out of Excel Saga. :) Really! I loved how little random bits from previous episodes suddenly became important plot points for future ones. I kinda miss that. But still, it’s funny stuff and hugely entertaining, even if I’m probably missing 25% of the jokes (even with the vidnotes on).
ReRolled is comin’ along niiiice. I have some placeholders stuck in there so I can keep working without some of my outsourced material, and it’s ticking along. I think the multiplayer aspect of the series is going to be less emphasized… you’ll need some very patient players, since there’s TONS of NPC dialogue to wade through. I want to make the story driven by the characters, not driven primarily by Wacky Situation of the Week, which was the faulting of Clucking Hostile. (Well, the middle of CH, the beginning and end were very plot/char driven.)
According to Mr. Shipping Tracker, tomorrow I get FLCL on DVD, and my USB Lightgun for the MAME box. I haven’t touched the MAME box in weeks since I didn’t want to deal with Emulaxian’s screwy configs or the gigs of files I need to port over… maybe I should start prepping today.
And… that’s it. No controversial material in this post, just a general State of the Flower. Sorry to disappoint. ^_^
Updated: No need to do two journal entries, for just two additional thingies:
I got FLCL on DVD! And the dub is GOOD! The actors know when to be wild and when to be understated, and unlike the Excel dub, the lead psychotic-cute-whacko girl character’s voice is NOT grating on the nerves. What’s more, the translation is spot on the money; they went for accuracy more than lip sync, and the only spots that differ from the sub script are untranslatable puns, which they tried to find an english equivilant for. Very nice!
I also got System of a Down’s album Toxicity on CD, and… bleh. I should’ve known better than to donate money to the RIAA. As usual, the radio singles represent the most polished, robust songs on the album — amazing stuff, really. But the rest of the album? It’s very ‘machine gun guitar’ style, with some political messages and songs that just did not stick with me like Aerials and Toxicity do. I’m not going to call it filler, since odds are there are folks who really enjoy that style of music, but for me it wasn’t all that.
