Lots of little updates today for you to chew on that are not entirely project driven, since I didn’t have an entirely project driven weekend (as noted).
Fraud! Someone has been using my credit card for internet gambling! That’s a surprise to me. I can’t think of how they got it, unless they were squatting on Amazon with a packet sniffer or something. I did make one or two more random purchases outside of AZ, but yow. The nice part is that the credit card folks spotted it near instantly and I’m not liable for any of the damages, and I’ll be getting a new card within five days. Reminds me of how I heard that credit card companies don’t care too much about fraud nowadays, since they can bag it early, the damages are minimal, and the real cash cow industry is legitimate credit card DEBT. Hmm.
Gravel! Was stuck in the nastiest traffic I’ve had all year today. Mom called the house to warn me that my usual route to the highway was backed up due to an accident, so I took the alternative… and fat lot of good it did me since the highway was backed up the ENTIRE WAY TO WORK because of an overturned dump truck full of gravel at the intersection outside my office. Jeez. Combine that with running a little late and I’ll have to leave the office late too, dammit.
Snipers! I live in the DC Area(tm), so needless to say that sniper’s been a pretty big deal to the locals. Josh had some interesting theories passed along from various experts he’d been chatting with. I have a suspicion this is going to be like a Jack the Ripper type deal… mystery killer never gets caught, stops after a wave of murders. It’s just too clean to assume that, as I had assumed when this first started, that he’d make a mistake and get caught. I think things like this show just how fragile our world can be when you break the social contract that forms civilization…
Egos. I had a lot of fun working PR2 last night (which is proving to be the most complicated mod so far in the series, but very amusing too). Not fun designing monsters, which are nearly impossible to balance properly, but fun designing Ralph Neckerson’s homepage in the Interplane. There’s a few fun surprises there if you look. Muwahaha. I’m also pondering doing a mideval version of Mahir.
Radio. While stuck in traffic, I decided to listen to radio to see if anything’s changed. Wow, it hasn’t. Out of the 7 songs I heard, only two were ones I’d classify as ‘new’. The rest were Tried and True Smashing Pumpkins (never their recent stuff, just Mellon Collie, it’s like no albums beyond that exist), Puberty Punk (aka Blink-182), Son of Puberty Punk (aka Blink-183 and all other soundalikes), etc. Only new ones were a crappy, juvenile Puddle of Mudd song about breaking up, and an actually great Foo Fighters song off their upcoming album that reminds me a lot of a harder version of Barenaked Ladies. Still, 1/7 is a bad ratio and I’m going back to MP3s tomorrow.
You know what’s annoying? I’d pay money for that song. That SONG. Not the album. I don’t buy a 20 dollar album anymore based on liking one song, I’ve been burned by that many, many times. But they don’t sell singles anymore, and they won’t sell me a single song online, so the only option is to peer to peer fileshare it. And now they’ve got dummy files and trackers up for popular songs. Where do you draw the line between ‘reasonable piracy prevention’ and ‘desperately trying to keep people from listening to music the way they want so we can force them to cough up more and more money’? Here I am willing to GIVE THEM MONEY and they won’t take it because it doesn’t fit their 20 buck a pop model. Nuts to that.
Roulette. Raw was a mixed bag last night. Some really, really funny stuff, some mediocre stuff, some AMAZING STUFF… if you saw the show I think you’ll know what goes under which of those three designations. But the finish was.. bleah. A “WTF?” after such a great match which we could’ve done without, since it’s like topping off a triple layer ice cream sundae with a tiny, tiny turd. Yum.
Oh, and check this out if you hate Triple H. Muwahaha.
