Okay, I finished reviewing it. Yes, it’s just in beta, but there’s a fundemental flaw in the game which is never, ever going to change… it’s just not any fun.
Face it, what did you enjoy in The Sims? Building and designing your house, seeing your little AI sims do wacky things you weren’t expecting, adding custom skins like anime characters into the mix, etc.
What did you not enjoy in The Sims? If you’re like me, you didn’t like that 60% of your ‘day’ was spent fighting your need meters, or that you were constantly impoverished unless you took jobs that ensured you’d have 80% of your day gone to needs and career. Basically, the ‘game’ mechanics put into place to somehow make The Sims a challenging gaming experience got in the way of the FUN. Real Life isn’t fun, and Sim Life was way too close to Real Life.
Well, TSO is ONLY the challenging gaming experience. You don’t have time for anything else — no social fun, no creativity, no nothing. It’s an unending battle against the meters and skill points (skills DECAY!) and there’s no point in building a house since houses are expensive and to be able to afford one you must attract people with meter/skill related objects which make no sense in a house, and to get the money to get those objects you have to go to other people’s houses to use objects like that to get money and AAAAAAAA MAKE IT STOP
The end result? Wal-mart style homes which make no sense where everybody makes pizza because they don’t have time to do anything else. That’s the game.
I thought I could get away with saying “Okay, I’ll just make a tiny focused house/business and try to creatively work around the flaws,” but that just doesn’t work. Your Sim is too needy. You HAVE to play the macroing / treadmill game. It’s built into the core of the game and it cannot be ignored. How can you run a playhouse or a fortune telling service if you have to go pee in the middle of a play or your client has to go take a nap in the middle of a fortune reading? A nap in YOUR bed since it’s expected you’ll provide for all of their needs?
Basically, they’ve made a graphical version of Progress Quest. And I’m not interested in playing it. Dammit. This had so much potential if they tried to make it less of a GAME and more of an EXPERIENCE! It annoys me to no end that they screwed it up so bad. But… c’est la simvie. They get no money from me.
