Okay, I finally got around to updating and editing my skimpy review.
Regarding the LotRFotRExDVD… wow. It’s a completely different movie! Okay, you know how some ‘special editions’ just jam a few new scenes in which rarely add a whole lot? Not here. The 35 minutes of extra footage is spliced here and there and everywhere, with new scenes AND new edits of existing scenes (with better camera angles; less Panning To The Right And Pulling Focus On Them shots).
The end result is a movie that’s less about brief interludes between action sequences and more about character development, epic myth and storytelling. There’s a lot more background given on the hobbits, Sam gets more scenes (all the hobbits get to show some more backbone than they did in the original cut) and, well, I’m running out of ways to say ‘It’s different and there’s more of everything.’ And it’s hard to explain just why a simple re-editing of the whole movie can change its nature so much, but hey! It does. There you go.
THIS is the version of the movie that I wish they had released in the first place. I know they wanted to keep the runtime down, but criminey, they hacked out a lot of good stuff just to keep the pace quick! Any moviegoer with a little patience would be able to stomach this version just fine, I’d think.
This makes me worry about Two Towers. Does this mean when I go to the theatre soon I’ll basically see a three hour hollywood action movie, then I have to wait a year for the superior fantasy genre oriented version? Man, if so, why bother going at all except to avoid spoilers? (Mind you it’s hard to spoil a book millions of people have read already, kinda it is with like Harry Potter movies.) But I’ll probably go see it anyway and think of it as a really long trailer for the REAL movie.
Next update: What the hell I’ve been up to with my four day weekend.
