Starting next month, production begins on Unreal Estate: The Animated Series.
This 24 episode run will be created in part with independent animation company FlashFile, which uses CG technology to cut down on development time/costs over traditional animation. Scripts will be developed by me, based on the stories with some adaptations to make them work in the new medium (but I’ll try to keep all the elements fans have appreciated in the series).
The art style will be in keeping with John Berry’s more americanized, cartoony renditions, rather than anime style. Although anime mentality permiates UE I’ve always felt his drawings, particularly the multi-panel layout comics, reflect the feeling I’m going for. Still, there will be anime influence in envrionment design; I guess the best comparison would be if you mixed Clerks: TAS with an anime mindset.
It’s going to be a few months before episode 1 is ready, but we’ve got some initial feelers out to Cartoon Network for broadcast during the Adult Swim hours on Saturday night. (I don’t see the series being particularly adult, but I guess anything mildly racy goes there.) If that falls through we might do an independently produced DVD, similar to the Demo on DVD project, since the core format of the animation is digital anyway.
I’m very excited about this project; we’re off to a shaky start but it’s solid enough that I’m comfortable announcing details now. I’ll have more to come in the future — AND we’ll be looking for voice actors… (Although I’ve already decided Lawrence Chu is a lock for Mallory given his great work on him in the radio play.)
