I suck at poetry. Believe me, I’ve tried — I took a creative writing class in college which focused on fiction and poetry. I ended up getting a B because the teacher didn’t like my poems and thought my stories were flat. Same bastard turned me down for entering the advanced creative writing classes two years in a row… …but I digress.
See, there’s this bit in my new NWN mod where I need an NPC to be reading poetry. I figured since I have as much poetic skill as a lump of coal, I’d toss it out to the public at large… best 1-3 poems I get in e-mail go into the game and you get credits in the documentation for contributing it. Anybody else who enters but doesn’t make the cut will still get a thank-you in the docs, unless I get like 200 of these things, which I highly doubt…
Your poem should be a 5-10 liner, nothing huge. The game is not a parody so don’t go for the funnybone. Rhyming is optional. Avoid modern subjects, since this is for a D&D world. (Also avoid Drow and other Forgotten Realms elements; it’s in a generic D&D world, not a particular campaign.) If possible, draw from this list of subjects: words, communication, speaking, love, beauty, creative expression. (They fit the character’s mentality.) I’d like them within a week from now, to set a rough deadline, but try not to take a full week if you can avoid it, y’know?
Assuming this crazy idea of mine doesn’t bomb, I thank you in advance. ^_^;
Edit: Note, the poet NPC is a woman, and she’s Lawful Good and hetero. Hence, no writing creepy gothic poetry or odes to the sexual attributes of other women.
