Furi Kuri #3 is finally out in domestic DVD, and I’m happy as a clam. I’ve been waiting two years for them to finish this series; you’d think that’d be more than enough time to do a lousy six part OVA, but hey, at least they took the time to do it RIGHT. The dubbing’s excellent with good cultural-crossovers to keep the jokes working, and it definitely beats the fansub.
Personally I think it’s genius, the way it works on three levels — absurdist entertainment, scifi plot, thematic elements about childhood. The way they made something with depth while appearing shallow is pretty impressive to me as a writer, and it’s a lot of fun to watch.
Problem is, I have yet to meet anybody offline who sees it as anything other than a fast paced work of inane silliness. Which means either I’m insane as I worship a stupid anime, or I’m sane and everybody else is insane and trying to steal my magic bag. Dunno.
Beyond that, last night I wasn’t really hot on doing a ton of EE2 work. It’s bizarre; when I’m on the job, I can’t stop thinking about plotting and planning EE2 and wanting to hack at it. When I’m HOME, I just want to relax without really challenging my mind with something that daunting. Go figure.
Instead, I finished up reading the seven issues of Johnny the Homocidal Maniac (from J. Vasquez, creator of Invader Zim). Fun series, but like the Maxx, it seems to fall apart near the end… major plot events happen and then only get minimal explanation after, and it ends with a whimper rather than a bang. I’m not sure what the point of it all was. Maybe a re-read would do me good, as clearly they were shooting for depth here, but my initial run through left me a bit flat.
Ahwell. Maybe more EE2 hacking tonight; tomorrow I RP with a friend (hooray!) and Sunday, maybe some minigolf. A good weekend.
Update: At long last, here’s a photo of the completed MAME cabinet. And a picture of me looking a bit like a zombie. Beware: Not Very Photogenic. Still, the cab’s sweet, and yes the marquee has a backlight. Nice!
