Bearable
by Tyler Elkink

A reservoir of love in brown and cream
enkindled by a child's heart, for those
with no protection but with need extreme
delivered by a slowly waking rose

pursued by hungry things of steel and flame,
with allies of the asphalt, wheel, and cap
(though not at first respect or smooth acclaim)
and willingness to turn their dreams to scrap.

Now lost, the comfort long denied, and rent;
a horror turned by selfless sacrifice
and breaking through at last, enlightenment
that melts a heart pretending to be ice

but gained at last in spite of cataclysm;
a life, and peace, and trucker catechism.
