"The Blue Sky of Death"

You know how it goes. You're walking along all fine and dandy in your customized RealWare powered reality, minding your own business, when BAM!-- the air thickens, the sound gets muted, and there's your Blue Sky of Death.

Safety Mode engaged. Please contact a REC-authorized Reality Engineer within 48 hours.

Nobody knows quite what causes the Blue Sky of Death, mostly because REC testing is so obtuse that few people actually make certification and become authorized Reality Engineers. But it happens, it happens more than you'd like to, and unless you want to risk reality crashing down around you and killing everybody you know or care about you're gonna fork over the points and get the damn Reality Engine fixed by one.

Nobody likes the Blue Sky of Death. RealWare hates the term in particular, preferring the much more media friendly "Safety Mode". Reality Engines, despite thousands of years of development, have never quite managed to lose all the bugs that make them unstable reality platforms. This is what leads to most RealWare dissent, this and the ridiculous prices for fixing the damn things.

But when your only alternative are Open Engines which crash less often but give you no little to no warning before going headfirst into NullSpace, what else are you gonna do, bucko?
