Cybernetic wetware. Artificial intelligences that
walk. Black bioimplant science. Aliens and hyperspace drives. And lots
of other words that were more or less made up because they don't actually
exist right now. These are things of the future, and they can be funny,
sad, absurd or wholly rational. They belong to a time and a place we can't
be. But it's a future we'd like to see. We'd like to see it, and that's
all -- because we'd rather not live there.
The following works were composed over the
span of roughly five years, so they range from a little childish to polished
and publishing ready. I've included reviews to help guide you to the best
stuff, but to fully understand the complex storylines that are woven throughout
the series, you may want to have a cup of tea and a quiet read of the whole
thing. Thanks, and enjoy!
Ratings Explained...
One of THE best in the series!
Pretty good, pretty good.
Not bad, average level. (Most will have this
by default.)
Has a few faults.
A lot weaker than I wanted it to be.
(Keep in mind that all these ratings are done by the author, who is a fairly
stern critic of this older work -- Your Mileage May Vary)
NeoFWLS
These stories were redesigned to act as 'Stand Alones'... stories that
you can read and enjoy without reading any other FWLS. They're based on
some of the most popular stories and/or the most non-scifi stories the
saga, edited and freshened up to match my writing skill in the here and
now.
2.1 - Death Before Yielding
The daily commute of the future may be more than you had bargained
for. Very mean spirited fun.
2.2 - Where No One Has Really
Felt Like Going Before
Straight parody of "Star Trek"... right down to the amazing expendable
red-shirt wearing security officers.
2.3 - Bad Trip
A surreal, immaturely stupid but fun experience into drugs and time
travel.
2.4 - New and Improved
An absurdist take on the Madison Avenue advertising philosophy.
2.5 - The Bridge
Light comedy about suicide. No, really.
2.6 - The Oracle
Nothing stinks worse than journeying to see Bhudda and finding out
he's out sick.
2.7 - Hell
Dark, serious... but not without hope. An exploration into expectations
of what purgatory's true intention is.
2.8 - The Run
Heavy descriptive writing for the senses, with a mother of an unexpected
ending.
2.9 - Misery Date
Love, science fiction style! A light romance for a change, complete
with scientific oddities.
2.10 - Help
Getting control over your life -- and your body -- can be harder than
it seems. A personal favorite and a reader favorite.
2.11 - Road Music
A variation on "The Run" -- descriptive imagery for the ear, action for the eyes.
2.12 - Memoria
One of the more philosophical stories; with plenty of science, but
with a core of human relations and the meaning of life. Seriously.
The FWLS Short Stories
The main body of work, sixty six stories in all over a variety of topics,
tones, genres and moods -- all taking place in the same universe, bound
in defined technology and cultures. (FWLS is actually stemming out of two
novels, which you can find below, but they aren't required to understand
the series.)
1.1 - Live Slow, Die Hard
Straight sci-fi action. Good narration, first person perspective past
tense narrator dies for the first time.
1.2 - Burning Nonrecyclable
Plastic
My first foray into cyberpunk, Gibson style with a dash of comedy.
1.3 - Where No One Has Really
Felt Like Going Before
Straight "Star Trek" parody.. awkwardly inserted into the FWLS universe,
but absurd and twisted fun.
1.4 - The Common Sense
More serious street crime tale, from an alien's point of view. Fun
with a crazy new language.
1.5 - Rebel Without a Spine
Lighthearted sci-fi comedy, challenging expected behaviors of subcultures.
1.6 - Belief in the Dollar
Traditional alien race mixer science fiction, with culture collision.
1.7 - 20th Century Park
A blatant parody of "Jurassic Park," including that famous 'This is
a UNIX system' scene.
1.8 - Todo's Guide to C'atel
Basic scene setting piece for the city of C'atel, told through someone
who doesn't quite get it.
1.9 - 293 Channels
Proof that television is bad for you; holodecks doubly so.
1.10 - 37047734 : The Next
Generation
Sequel to a story I wrote in high school; nasty bureaucracy parody
in an alien culture.
1.11 - Tales of the Rainy City,
Act I
More dangerous fun in cyberspace; introduces three of the main C'atel
cast memebers.
1.12 - Tales of the Rainy City,
Act II
A bent twist on the #1 Fan Stalker thing. Also includes a really bad
poem.
1.13 - Tales of the Rainy City,
Act III
Fun with the notion of art, plus my first attempts at romantic comedy.
1.14 - Making the Grade
I'd always suspected the universe was a third string school project.
Execution was a little off, but introduces important parts of the FWLS
continuity.
1.15 - Excitement, Danger and
Intrigue
Cheesy spy movie parody, and light comedy.
1.16 - Interview in Motivated
Rock
Introduces 'Stomach Contents', the band to end all bands, in journalistic
style.
1.17 - The Shell Game, Pt.
I
Second trilogy, this one with a continuing storyline; something new
to do with A.I.s in a sci-fi world.
1.18 - The Shell Game, Pt.
II
Continues to expand the A.I. culture, which started in Haven Borne.
1.19 - Bad Trip
More screwball parody; this time blending druggie flicks and time travel
movies.
1.20 - Junk Drawer
Very serious, brief narration of loss... derivative of Gibson, but
solid.
1.21 - Death Before Yielding
Extremely nasty and violent approach to the daily traffic commute.
1.22 - New and Improved
Twistedly weird approach to advertising in the modern age.
1.23 - Spatulas of Fury
Parody of "Street Fighter 2" and similar fighting games; comedy.
1.24 - The Bridge
An attempt to make a simple, less technology based comedy.
1.25 - Reel to Real Editing
The first story with Reality, Inc.; a major player in the FWLSverse.
1.26 - The Oracle
Written specifically for a high school forensics (reader's acting)
competition; simple and fun.
1.27 - The Universe, 2.0
Extension of "Making the Grade"; surreal explanation of creation myth.
1.28 - The Run
Heavy descriptive writing for the senses, with a mother of an unexpected
ending.
1.29 - The Christmas Episode
WARNING : I intended to write the sickest, most violent piece of garbage
conceivable. I actually came well under the mark, BUT...
1.30 - Ah, Drama
First major foray into how I view drama/melodrama. Straight adventure.
1.31 - Gilligan's Matrix
Somewhat strange attempt to put Gilligans Island into cyberpunk. Erk.
1.32 - Profit and Tradition
Revisiting some characters and places from "Space Patrol" -- but loses
readers who are unfamiliar.
1.33 - Research and Design
Sci-fi action adventure! Could probably make a good Hollywood film
with a large budget. Same attitude, too.
1.34 - Hell
Dark, serious... but not without hope. An exploration into expectations
of what purgatory's true intention is.
1.35 - The Spaminator
What else? "Terminator" parody, very silly.
1.36 - Dangerous Toys
Challenges the idea in cyberpunk that the coolest technology is the
end-all, be-all of existence.
1.37 - Net.Gods
Continues Dangerous Toys's engimatic ending; shows what strange doors
virtual reality could open.
1.38 - Hard Sell
Fun with technology; nuff said.
1.39 - Misery Date
Love, science fiction style! A light romance for a change, complete
with scientific oddities.
1.40 - Rain Nor Sleet Nor Snow
What if disgruntled postal workers formed their own company? Mean spirited,
but fun.
1.41 - Good Bad Guy
...and the darker side of that particular company's affect on the world.
1.42 - On the Writer's Block
TRANSITION POINT... After a long hiatus, I returned to FWLS,
advanced the timeline by ten years.. and started putting out much fresher,
quality work. This was the transition story.
1.43 - Rock and Roll Will Never
Die
Celebrity suicide, evil medicene, corporate greedmongers... sick, but
funny.
1.44 - The Big Time
Jaded programmer seeks escape from repetitive life. Ending's a bit
off.
1.45 - Help
My personal favorite... readers loved it, too. Introduces Help, a frequently
occuring character, and her unique problem in life.
1.46 - All the News That's
Fit to Print
An experiment into multimedia for a story... but I did it in Pascal for
DOS. The text version just lacks. The binary's available here.
1.47 - Better Safe Than Sorry
The stock cyberpunk gag of getting a dangerous implant out; but now,
the characters from the earliest cyberpunk stories in FWLS have matured.
1.48 - Food for Thought
A dark tale of biotechnology gone wrong.. with a predatorial stance.
Mature compared to earlier works.
1.49 - Tales of the Sunny City,
Act I
Inverse of the earlier trilogy; the world's first "Suburban Cyberpunk"
epic, where superstudents play pranks Mensa members would scratch their
heads over.
1.50 - Tales of the Sunny City,
Act II
The 80's teenpic gets taken to the next level. Romance, technology
and comedy. (This originally was going to be spun off into its own series;
I may still do that in the future.)
1.51 - Tales of the Sunny City,
Act III
A bit more serious than the previous two, but completing out the series
nicely.
1.52 - :)
Conceptual work; I don't think I've ever met anybody who can talk in
emoticons.
1.53 - God ASCII
Serious tale of technology... visuals vs. text, flashy vs. retro. If
I'm right, it'll put Microsoft out of business.
1.54 - The Joy of Silly
More a concept than a story; the idea of 'Generik Silly' is presented,
as well as Generika in general.
1.55 - Bloodlines, Act I
Shell Game taken to the next level; a journey of self discovery and
family heritage.
1.56 - Bloodlines, Act II
The story continues... and shows where Help is now.
1.57 - Bloodlines, Act III
Concluding in the heart of one of the most evil software empires known
to man, and an escape from it.
1.58 - Road Music
A variation on "The Run" -- descriptive imagery for the ear, action
for the eyes.
1.59 - The God Maker
Yet more mad scientists who wanna play god. Maybe there's a school
that trains these guys.
1.60 - The Chain Rule
Total sendup of the make.money.fast legacy of e-mail chain letters
and online legends.
1.61 - Overnight Success
Absurdly silly, "Simpsons"-esque sendup of the garage band phenomenon.
1.62 - Red and White Night
Extremely dark tale of Generik Evil. You're warned.
1.63 - Beta
Expanding out the mythos surrounding Help, this time from the other
side of cyberspace.
1.64 - The Christmas Episode II
(removed -- excessively sick) While I don't have a problem with
that personally, I think I'd like to keep it off this archive...
1.65 - Memoria
One of the more philosophical stories; with plenty of science, but
with a core of human relations and the meaning of life. Seriously.
1.66 - Way Out
The final story; I decided to make it as weird as possible so I could
close the plot threads that were building and end FWLS in a strange way.
The Base Novels
This was actually the very first writing I had EVER! done, aside from
a few short stories in elementary school. Space Patrol, the first novel,
is a compilation of short stories that I had written for a writing class
in high school, which first turned me onto writing. It's not my best work,
as it's so early in my development cycle, but provides a great view of
where it all began... the second novella is a single story, expanding Space
Patrol's artificially intelligent character into his own saga.
Space Patrol
The strange and surreal adventures of a team of misfit troubleshooters
in the wide, wide galaxy. Direct science fiction, action, comedy... heavily
influenced by popular culture, with fully explored characters. The base
of a Future We'd Like to See.
Haven Borne
The beginning of the A.I. story saga -- from the birth of a new species,
to its eventual fate, all in a short span of time and a secluded corner
of the vast information infrastructure.
