Faeries

"Faeries" is a catch-all for persons from the Land of Faerie. Humans usually say "creatures" but I'm going to use persons, because "creature" is what you see crawling out of a Black Lagoon in a horrible old movie. These are people. Even the ones who don't have two arms and legs and don't speak beyond horrible howling growls and slathering noises. Treat them as such or else!

Humans come in plenty of shapes and sizes, but generally the most variance they get is by skin tone and facial features, depending on what area of the world their ancestors hail from. Faeries are more varied. True, generally speaking the pointy ears and traditional 'elven' features are common, but then you also have ogres, and pixies, and dryads, and all the mysterious and unique members of the Winter Court... it just goes on, and on. I don't have time or paper to write down every single one, and I haven't even met a tiny percentage of the different Fae in my short time on this Earth.

One thing they all have in common is loyalty to the Summer Court or the Winter Court. Ordinarily these factions would be at each other's throats, but since arriving on Earth, an unheard of alliance has been formed in the name of surviving in a world of humans. Combined, their land holdings in America are simply "The Faerie Court." But make no mistake, old grudges do run deep, and it's not uncommon to hear of incidents between loyalists of Summer and Winter. If you're going to be a human who travels in Fae circles, trust me, you are going to want to stay out of THAT mess. Don't take sides. Once you take sides you're going to be expected to get involved in all sorts of political nonsense.

Another commonality is the use of magic. Not all Fae use spells, and some seem to have spell-like abilities innate to their person (particularly the oddities of the Winter Court) but if you're high up in the courts, you're expected to know some magic. It's tradition, and those with strong command of magic usually have strong command of those without magic.

I could write a whole book about the Fae, but I don't have time or interest enough for anthropological studies. I will say this, though... they're no better or worse than the humans. That's coming from someone with a low opinion of the human race, true, but my point is you can find good and evil out there if you look. Don't mistake them for entirely good or entirely evil. And be careful who you trust, because one can look like the other.

EDITOR'S NOTE: You say that the grass is always greener on the other side, right? Well, I'm a human fanboy. I think you guys are awesome. Fae, on the other hand, are determined to turn tail and run backwards into the past -- they won't accept that this is the modern age, and things CAN be different. I'm the only Fae I know that packs heat, for instance. 357! Just like Dirty Harry!

But I wish humans would make new things, too. Emily claims they're doing the same thing, living in the past, and that's a shame. Hopefully this website can move both of them forward a little.
